What proportion of 501(c)(3) organizations have fiscal years that end in December? (FAQ)

The attached Excel spreadsheet shows that nearly 60% of 501(c)(3) organizations (including public charities that

don't file IRS Forms 990 or 990-PF as well as private foundations) end their fiscal years in December. That

percentage drops to 49% for public charities filing 990s or 990-EZs.

June is the second most popular ending month with 19% of all (c)(3) organizations and nearly 30% of filing public

charities ending their fiscal years in that month. September ranks as the third most popular month.
