Poverty - Comprehensive

  • Focusing on the working poor, the Family Independence Initiative encourages participants to set their own financial goals and rely on friendships and social networks rather than caseworkers.

  • Purpose Built Communities believes in holistic community revitalization. This requires addressing issues education, housing, job opportunities, transportation, and other critical areas to fight poverty.

    Building Wealth

  • Community-Wealth.Org, a project of The Deomocracy Collaborative at the University of Maryland, provides an overview, models and research related to community wealth building organizations.

  • Community-Wealth.Org also provides a community wealth planning toolbox

    Homelessness

  • The National Alliance to End Homelessness lists several solutions that are preventing homelessness and rapidly rehousing those who become homeless.

  • Pathways to Housing is a housing first model that places participants in private apartments scattered throughout the community and then provides access to social services and health care. Participants are not required, however, to access these services. They are only required to meet with Pathways employees twice a month.

    Hunger

  • Feeding America operates two national programs to address childhood hunger.

  • Kids cafe offers free meals and snacks to low income children where they already congregate--such as youth clubs, churches and schools.

  • The Backpack Program provides food to students on weekends and school vacations when the free or reduced price school lunch is not available.

    Employment

  • Project Quest partners with employers in need of skilled workers and community colleges offering the required courses, Project Quest recruits and trains workers for highly skilled positions in in industries such as healthcare electronics and information systems.

  • SkillWorks is a multiyear initiative that brings together philanthropy, government, community organizations, and employers to help low income individuals find work and businesses find skilled workers in Boston.

  • Cincinnati Works has an 80% one year job retention rate among its participants and is currently being replicated is Texas and Kentucky. The model not only focuses on initial job placement, but on retention, advancement, and managing barriers to long term employment.
