Poverty rates and number of persons

  • In 2008, more than 1 in eight Americans were poor.
  • Nineteen percent of children live in poverty.
  • The poverty rate among black children is three times higher than that of white children.
  • Poverty rates are higher for unmarried female headed families than for married couple families.
  • In 2008, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, West Virginia and the District of Columbia each had more than 16% of its population living in poverty.

      • More than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) are obese.
      • Higher income women are less likely to be obese than low-income women.
      • By state, obesity prevalence ranged from 20.5% in Colorado to 34.7% in Louisiana in 2012. No state had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Nine states and the District of Columbia had prevalence between 20-25%. Thirteen (13) states (Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia) had a prevalence equal to or greater than 30%.
