Ethical guidelines for grantmakers, and grant seekers |
Natalia Goldin (Shakirova) wrote to ARNOVA-L (see http://www.arnova.org/listserv.php) in April 2006 to ask: Dear colleagues, I am searching for books, articles or other resources on ethics ingrantmaking. My NGO colleagues in Russia are putting together a manual for grantmakers and would like to hear about experiences of their colleagues in the US and possibly other countries. She mentioned these: I came across the title Ethics in Grantmaking & Grantseeking: Making Philanthropy Better. By Michael Josephson. Marina del Rey, CA: Joseph & Edna Josephson Institute of Ethics, l992. (This book is out of print. -- ED.) I also know that the Council on Foundations adopted Statement of Ethical Principles in 2005. The Council on Foundations Statement is available at http://www.cof.org/Content/General/Display.cfm?contentID=2800&orglink=46 R. Patrick Halpern from Virginia Tech suggested these additional resources: Preserving the Public Trust: A Study of Exemplary Practices in Grantmaking http://www.nonprofitresearch.org/usr_doc/16695.pdf Ethical Dimensions of International Grantmaking: Drawing the Line in a Borderless World http://wwwserver.law.wits.ac.za/workshop/workshop05/papers2005/sprague.pdf Jane Garthson, Mills Garthson & Associates, Toronto, Canada, offered further suggestions: While is written from the viewpoint of the charity not the grantmaker, part of ethical partnering is consideration of values on both sides. I suggest you read Ethical Decision Making in Fund Raising, by Marilyn Fischer. While there is no specific ethics section, there are ethical considerations throughout From Grantmaker to Leader; Emerging Strategies for 21st Century Foundations, edited by Frank L. Ellsworth and Joseph Lumarda. ((Order href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/047138058X/internetnonprofi"> From Grantmaker to Leader from Amazon.Com.) Posted 4/7/06 -- PB |
