The Nonprofit FAQ

What is service learning?
The National and Community Service Act of 1990 as quoted on the Service
Learning page at Franklin County (KY) Public Schools' web page at
http://www.franklin.k12.ky.us/ServiceLearn.HTML

SIMPLE DEFINITION

Service-learning is a form of experiential learning where students apply
academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to address genuine
community needs.

EXPANDED DEFINITION

Service-learning combines community service with learning activities. It
allows: "...students [to] learn and develop through active participation in
thoughtfully
organized service experiences that meet actual community needs and that are
coordinated in collaboration with the school and community.
[Service-learning] is integrated into the student's academic curriculum or
provides structured time for the student to think, talk, or write about
what the student did and saw during the actual service activity. [It]
provides students with opportunities to use newly acquired skills and
knowledge in real-life situations in their own communities. [It also]
enhances what is taught in school by extending student learning beyond the
classroom and into the community and helps to foster the development of a
sense of caring for others."
